 J.J. Morse
First editor of The Lyceum Banner

The Lyceum Banner was first published in November 1890 a copy is held in the Lyceum Museum Library at Darlington England. In 1902 the Lyceum Banner was given to the Lyceum Union, who have produced it continuously since that time.

When the first Lyceum Banner was published it was a very important time for Lyceumists, as they had a monthly record of Lyceum Work and Progress and were able to communicate their thoughts and ideas to other Lyceums all over the country. therefore adopting a feeling of Union between all the Lyceums in Britain. With the Banner different theories could be discussed they were able to write about what they did in their Lyceums, and share their inspired writings like Teachings, Philosophy, and Poetry with each other.

With the advent of the telephone communication became easier throughout the country but it was only available to the people who could afford it. but the written word was still very important to those who wished to share their spiritual knowledge with each other as the saying goes. ‘ The pen is mightier than the sword.’

The Lyceum Banner has moved with the times and these days they use modern technology such as emails and computers to communicate with other Lyceumists who in turn send in their contributions to the Banner through the new methods, but a lot of members can still use the postal service as not everyone has a computer so everyone   is catered for.

The Lyceum Banner still has a very important role to play within the LSU to promote the education of the young and not so young in Religion, Science, Philosophy, Art. It still gives the Lyceum members the opportunity to communicate, especially the young who have their own Junior Banner where they can send in their drawings, do a quiz,    or write a short letter with news on what they are doing at their Lyceums. the older members keep in touch through the banner to share the experiences they have gained through the years, and the new members are able learn from them.

Cher's note

I'm sure the Pioneers of The Lyceum Banner will be very proud that it is still

"The Official Organ of the Spiritualist's Lyceum Union."
